‘Tis the season for fresh starts, and therefore, fresh fashion. But before you go purging everything in your closet in an effort to reinvent yourself for what is sure to be your best year to date, take a deep breath and relax knowing that the fashion industry isn’t pushing everything from 2021 out the door. In other words, new year, new you doesn’t have to mean an entirely new wardrobe—many of our favorite fashion trends of 2021 are sticking around.
2021 was a year full of bold trends. We saw people leaving their homes and making the conscious decision that they would make a big impact on their re-entry to society after isolation. We’re personally glad that a number of these pronounced styles will continue to be trendy well after the ball drops.
These are the pieces we’ve worn constantly this year—and that we’ll keep wearing in 2022.
1. Chunky boots
In 2021, chunky boots enjoyed a major rise in popularity. And considering they are both statement-making and practical, what’s not to love? If you hopped on the trend in fall 2021, you’re ahead of the game—these babies are sure to stay stylish through the winter.
2. Puffer jackets
Puffer jackets had a moment in 2021 and we’re continuing to cozy up in them all through the winter. We love the versatility of these jackets and love taking our outerwear up a notch this winter.
3. Relaxed denim
This year, we swapped our skinny jeans for more relaxed styles. Grab your mom jeans, straight jeans, dad jeans, and all your other relaxed varieties and give them prime real estate in your closet—you’ll be reaching for them constantly in the new year.
4. All things plaid
The bright red tartan of holidays may be gone for another season, but prep and academia revivals live on. Tops, shoes, skirts and more—no wardrobe piece is off limits so continue zesting up your OTD with this favorite woven style.
5. Bright colors & bold prints
As fashionistas attempted to make a grand comeback to the outside world, post-quarantine living saw a big increase in bright colors. This trend is carrying through to the new year, so we’re holding onto all of our funkiest, eye-catching, color-popped pieces.
6. Lavender, “very peri,” and everything in-between
Remember how lavender was a hot trend for fall 2021. Well it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Additionally, Pantone, recently named the color of the year: a mid-shade of purple dubbed “Very Peri.”
7. Knitwear
Knitwear is never out of fashion. Knit pants, sets and sweaters will remain a favorite of knitters in 2022. Cozy up!
8. Statement collars
Stylized, statement pieces became a staple in 2021 and it’s a trend we anticipate staying popular in the new year. We love the bold statement collar in particular. These tops are essential for being the best dressed person in Zoom’s meeting room.
