Much nostalgic hay has been made of the revival of Y2K’s and the early aughts’s most fun—or, depending on your perspective, fearsome—trends. Low-rise jeans, velour sweatsuits, and everything else going on over at Blumarine are all getting another chance to shine in fashion’s spotlight.
The 2010’s are a new fashion era. Yes, the trend TiltaWhirl moves fast enough for your head to spin and fashion lovers are constantly reshaping their wardrobes via online resale sites. The early days of this decade are becoming vintage territory. We saw peplums in Matthew Williams’s spring lineup for Givenchy and Nicolas Ghesquière’s Louis Vuitton cruise collection (one popped up at Moschino as well), blurry Technicolor prints at Dries, wetsuit-style tops at Stella McCartney, and 2010’s-Lanvin-esque ruffles and exaggerated sleeves in AZ Factory’s show, where designers paid tribute to the late Alber Elbaz. Isabel Marant even released a redesigned version of her popular wedge sneakers earlier this year.
Galaxy-print Jeffrey Campbell Lita boots are all over the resale websites. (In August, Jezebel stated that the style’s revival was near. Depop shared some statistics, including the fact that there has been a 333% increase of searches for the Lita style over the past year. Other terms that are trending on Depop include wedge sneakers, which saw a 400% increase in searches last month, and neoprene, which has seen a 22 per cent jump in search queries month over month.

I was informed by the company that the 2010 Boy Chanel flap bag was one its top 10 favorite bags. The Celine Luggage bag, designed and launched by Phoebe Philo in the 2010’s is also high up. A few other styles from the era, including Prada’s Galleria tote and Balenciaga’s City Mini, have shown a modest increase—though I was told it’s still a tad early to say whether those will go big. If you’re a bet woman, you might consider going through your closet and finding some treasures that are 10-12 years old.
All these findings may feel premature, but I am aware of that. Pretty Little Liars But they don’t reboot. It was a reflection of that time when people were still cheering startups’ “move quickly and break things” philosophy, rather than watching documentaries about their failures. The optimism and abundance was also reflected in the superfluous cascades ruffles or peplums.
The 2020 vision of the 2010 aesthetic is still in flux. I found everything from a Rachel Zoe-esque furry Vera Wang vest, to Yeezus merch when I searched Depop. As most people didn’t in the early aughts. The good news is that there’s still time for us to decide how we want to remember it—and what we’d rather forget.
