“You don’t have to be your mother. You have to define you,” Nana Mensah is told in a new trailer for “Queen of Glory.” The multi-hyphenate’s directorial debut sees her starring as Sarah, a doctoral student on the brink of a major life change when tragedy strikes. Sarah is only weeks away of moving from New York City with her married boyfriend to Ohio, when her mother dies. Sarah leaves behind her business, a Christian bookstore in the tight-knit Ghanian immigrant neighborhood where she was born.

Faced with planning her mother’s funeral and figuring out what to do with the store, Sarah becomes increasingly overwhelmed with all that’s being asked of her — and seems to start reconsidering her future.

“I want people to ponder the first generation and immigrant experiences with more fullness,” Mensah, whose on-screen credits include “The Chair” and “New Amsterdam,” told us.

“Queen of Glory” hits theaters July 15. Mensah was awarded Best New Narrative Director at 2021 Tribeca Film Festival. The pic also received two Indie Spirit Award nominations. Mensah wrote the script.
