The Met Gala 2022 Theme, Explained

0 155

Spring has arrived, Taco Bell’s Mexican Pizza is back, and the Met Gala 2022 returns to restore fashion world peace on Monday, May 1. It seems like yesterday that we were watching Sir Lil Knight X walk down the red carpet. Fashion’s biggest night is back and we couldn’t be more excited for a discussion about celebrity looks. It’s one the simple pleasures of life.

One of the most fascinating parts of the Met Gala is watching how attendees interpret the theme through elaborate outfits and outrageous beauty looks. We can’t forget Lady Gaga’s four-act performance at the 2019 camp-themed event, or Rihanna’s pope cosplay at 2018 gala. This year’s theme for the event is Gilded Glamour VogueYou may be a little confused if you don’t know much about history.

Here’s a quick overview of the Met Gala 2022 before you go.

What exactly does “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” mean?

According to VogueThe Met Gala 2022 will celebrate the second half of the two-part costume exhibit feature that honors American contributions to fashion. Head curator Andrew Bolton told writer Steff Yotka that this year’s portion of the exhibit is set to feature unsung heroes who have advanced the American design world: “The stories really reflect the evolution of American style, but they also explore the work of individual tailors, dress-makers, and designers,” Bolton said. “What’s exciting for me is that some of the names will be very familiar to students of fashion like Charles James, Halston, and Oscar de la Renta, but a lot of the other names really have been forgotten, overlooked, or relegated into the footnotes of fashion history. So one of the main intentions of the exhibition is to spotlight the talents and contributions of these individuals, and many of them are women.”

Last year’s exhibit, which can still be seen IRL until September 5, was focused on the similarities between American designers when building upon one another. This year’s portion focuses on a series of film vignettes set in period rooms within the American Wing. Film makers like Sofia Coppola, Tom Ford, Regina King, Martin Scorsese, and Chloé Zhao are all taking part.

The entire exhibit opens May 7, which is the Saturday after the Met gala. But first, celebrities party.

What is the dress code for this event?

Met Gala will be white-tie, which means organizers and co-chairs expect the best of the best formal wear. (Sorry Timothée, you can’t wear Converse again.) We’re hoping for another Chanel shorts moment or sheer dress moment at the red carpet. But the more trendy looks will likely be saved for the high profile afterparties we’re sure we’ll hear about the morning following.

Do you have any ideas for what people will wear?

Celebrities will be displaying period drama on the red carpet, as America’s Gilded Age is the gala theme for this year. Think opera gloves, frilled edges, and bosom-boasting blouses that are reminiscent of romantic aesthetics from that era. According to TikTok videos several people are referring to VivienneWestwood as one of their favourite brands. It’s not hard to imagine Westwood’s signature look mixed with modern-day, punk style. It doesn’t matter that the 81 year-old designer isn’t American. If the vibe is right the fashion girls will be all over it.

So…Bridgerton?

It’s not exactly. The 30-year period of innovation, cultural revolution that lasted between 1870 and 1900 in the United States is known as the Gilded Age. While we do get major BridgertonIt draws inspiration from Regency era costumes, which were discontinued in 1820. We suggest the show that is very literally about the time period to get a more historical representation of what we’ll be seeing on Monday, May 1. The Gilded AgeHBO.
