Dr. Taylor Alison Swift just received an honorary doctorate in fine arts from New York University, which her partner Joe Alwyn called “an incredible honor.” He’s absolutely right—if an honorary degree weren’t an honor, it would just be a degree!
Promoting his new Hulu show Conversations with FriendsAlwyn, who might or might not have been engaged to Swift, was asked to comment about Swift’s endorsement of the series. So his response—“an incredible honor, it’s absolutely amazing”—could also mean that having Swift as a fan is an honor (which it is) and that it’s absolutely amazing (again, yes).

Swift addressed the NYU commencement crowd but didn’t speak about her relationship to Alwyn. However, she did reflect on the challenges of dating in the spotlight. “Having the world treat my love life like a spectator sport in which I lose every single game was not a great way to date in my teens and 20s, but it taught me to protect my private life fiercely,” she said, more or less explaining her and Alwyn’s policy of Just Not Gonna Talk About It. Joe Alwyn will discuss their creative collaborations even though they may not be open about their romantic relationship. (He is credited on a few songs on her most recent albums. “It wasn’t like, ‘It’s five o’clock, it’s time to try and write a song together,’” he said in a recent interview. “It came about from messing around on a piano, and singing badly, then being overheard, and being, like, ‘Let’s see what happens if we get to the end of it together.’”
