“Little Richard: I Am The whole lot” pays tribute to the OG rock ‘n roll icon. “He spit on each rule there was in music,” we’re advised in a brand new trailer for the documentary from Lisa Cortés (“All In: The Battle for Democracy”). The Sundance title uncovers the Black queer origins of American pop music — and the way it was whitewashed. The tribute to Little Richard, AKA Richard Penniman, options interviews with the late trailblazer’s household, different musicians, and Black and queer students.
“The legacy of Little Richard is advanced,” an interviewee explains. Whereas he was “very, superb at liberating different folks — he was not good at liberating himself.” The spot touches on how he renounced his queerness as a result of he “didn’t wish to burn in hell.”
“Little Richard: I Am The whole lot” will obtain particular one-night-only theatrical screenings April 11, adopted by further theaters and a digital launch April 21.
