Warning: Euphoria Season 2 finale Warning!

While the HBO teen drama first caught viewers’ attention with the characters’ out-there eye makeup looks and flashy outfits, there are some plots that are straight-up violent and grisly. Perhaps the bleakest storyline of all revolves around the fate of Ashtray (Javon Walton), the ruthless adopted little brother of everyone’s favorite lovable dug dealer Fezco (Angus Cloud).

In the season 2 finale, which aired on February 27, Ash’s fate was almost certainly sealed: After a SWAT team invaded his house, the preteen barricaded himself in the bathroom and was shot after firing a gun at the police. Walton spoke with VarietyInterview with Walton after the finale about whether this is really the end of his character. “There’s definitely hope for Ashtray to still be alive,” Walton said. “Because if there’s somebody who could take a bullet in the show, it’s Ashtray. Ashtray is one toughass kid. He’s not playing around. I believe he has a shot about being around for season 3.”

In the same interview, however, Walton recalled filming the bathtub sequence and referred to the moment as his “last time on set” in a way that feels pretty permanent. “It was pretty sad shooting that last scene because I knew that would be my last time on set, which sucks,” he continued. “I knew I was gonna miss everybody there…. It was a sad, but also a happy day. Because I knew I was going to make a strong last impression.” Spoken like a guy who thinks his time on the show is over….

Take into account Euphoria writer Sam Levinson has a reputation for changing things up last-minute, it’s likely that the plans for the third season, which is definitely happening, are far from set in stone. In fact, Walton says the finale itself was changed significantly “like a day before” it was filmed.

According to the actor, Ashtray’s fate was initially meant for Fezco. “Ashtray wasn’t supposed to get shot. That was another thing,” he said. “He wasn’t supposed to get shot! Fez was supposed to be shot first, which is insane. And then, like a day before, they changed the storyline to me getting shot.”
