Thierry Mugler, a legendary French fashion designer, has died at the tender age of 73.
The news was confirmed on the designer’s official Instagram account, which captioned a black and white of Mugler: “It is with deep sadness that the House of Mugler announces the passing of Mr Manfred Thierry Mugler. A visionary whose imagination as a couturier, perfumer and -maker empowered people around the world to be bolder and dream bigger every day.”
His theatrical, innovative designs were largely inspired by 1940s and 50s glamour and the silhouettes that those decades provided. They are often instantly recognisable as his work due to their exaggerated shoulders, hips, constricted waists, and futuristic, sculptural bodices.

Many of the most famous, trend-setting faces were seen wearing Mugler’s designs, from David Bowie to Diana Ross, George Michael to Rihanna, Béyonce to Kim Kardashian.
In 2019, Mugler returned to fashion design after a 20-year hiatus, to create the “wet dress” that Kim Kardashian wore to the Met Gala. It took eight months for the look to be created.

At 14 years old, Mugler was a talented performer who was a dancer for the Ballet du Rhin (an opera company in France).
