Every once in a while—and especially during the winter, when cold-weather footwear is of paramount importance—a new shoe style comes seemingly out of nowhere, ostensibly designed to withstand frigid temperatures, that is equal parts polarizing and covetable. The Ugg boot was a controversial but indisputably comfortable fashion trend that was popular in the 2000s. It is now a favorite of the fashion world. The Croc, a utilitarian style similar to a rubber loafer, was then introduced. Christopher Kane and Balenciaga have since given it the high-fashion treatment. This time around, there’s a new contender: Introducing the “sluffer,” a portmanteau of slipper and puffer, and pretty much the only shoe we’re eyeing as we continue to redefine our style amid the ongoing pandemic. The sluffer is a unique shoe that strikes an unusually attractive balance between fashionable and functional. It can also be worn outdoors or indoors, in the mountains or on the streets. It is no surprise that fashion brands such as Toms and Prada have created variations of the sluffer. For further proof, here’s another: TheKendall Jenner is the slut of 2022. Her sluffer of choice: The North Face Women’s Thermoball Traction Mule V, a padded slip-on that’s essentially like wearing a Bottega bag on your feet. There are many options.
