Brazilian surfer Maya Gabeira is about to make a splash at DOC NYC. Stephanie Johnes’ doc in regards to the trailblazer, “Maya and the Wave,” will open the thirteenth version of the competition. A press launch introduced the information.
Described by Johnes as “an empathetic portrait of a girl preventing to attain her dream whereas struggling towards gender bias,” the movie sees Gabeira battling accidents and sexism to make her mark on the world of massive wave browsing. “Maya and the Wave” is making its U.S. premiere on the competition. Johnes’ directorial debut, “Doubletime,” premiered at SXSW. The doc follows two groups making ready for the Double Dutch world championship.
This 12 months’s DOC NYC lineup consists of two Centerpiece screenings: Oscar winner Barbara Kopple’s “Gumbo Coalition” and Emmy nominee Daybreak Porter’s “Cirque Du Soleil: With out a Internet.” The previous is a portrait of two modern civil rights leaders, and the latter presents a glance inside the long-lasting circus.
DOC NYC runs from November 9-27.
