Laura Karpman is joining Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Nia DaCosta for “The Marvels,” the sequel to 2019’s “Captain Marvel.” Variety announced that Karpman, a five-time Emmy winner whose credits include “Lovecraft Country” and “Set It Up,” will compose the music for the blockbuster. Larson and Parris will reprise their roles, while DaCosta will take over the directing duties from Anna Boden.

“I am thrilled to be going on this wild adventure with Nia DaCosta and Carol Danvers and am really looking forward to the collaboration,” said Karpman. The source notes that she “will be the second female composer ever to score a Marvel movie. Pinar Toprak, who scored ‘Captain Marvel,’ was the first.”

Plot details are being kept under wraps for the sequel, which was penned by Megan McDonnell (“WandaVision”) and is slated to hit theaters in February 2023.  “Ms. Marvel” star Iman Vellani will appear in the film.

Karpman is a long-standing supporter of inclusion in Hollywood. She runs an all-women’s studio and founded Alliance of Women Film Composers. “Karpman became the first American woman composer inducted by the music branch of the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences. She was subsequently elected to be the first female governor of the music branch,” per Variety. “During her short time as governor, Karpman made indelible strides towards diversity, advocating for Academy membership for dozens of underrepresented composers and songwriters, as well as spearheading the Academy Women’s Initiative.”

“What If…?” and “Pray Away” are among Karpman’s most recent credits.
