The Best Self-Tanners To Use This Summer

0

If you’ve never touched self-tanner before, you’ve probably heard the horror stories: orange hands, streaky legs, a tan that faded before you even left the house, missed spots. Everything you read about self-tanning will probably make you never want to try it, but here’s what they won’t tell you: There are many tips and tricks to getting the perfect, glowy self-tan (and sometimes, it all comes down to a good product).

Tanning expert Jordan Cook gave us a few pro-level tips for the best tan ever this summer, and we’re sharing our top 20 best self-tanners no matter what you’re looking for.

Cook explained that everyone can benefit from a gradual tanning, regardless of skin type. “The beauty of a gradual tanner is that you are in control of your shade,” Cook said. “You can apply as little or as often until the product becomes the shade of color you desire. Whether it’s a mousse, water spritz, or tanning drops, each you can tailor to suit you.”

If you’re unsure which type to use, it all depends on personal preference. Mousse tanners have the deepest shade. Tanning waters are easier to apply and less streaky. Gradual tanners provide a natural look and lighter coverage. As for which shade to buy, Cook made it simple: “If you are a fair to medium natural skin tone, then go for the medium shade; this will look most natural on you. If you have a more olive, darker skin tone, go for the dark.”

If you have a deeper skin tone, don’t fret—self-tanning products are for you too! Self-tanners can be used to even out skin tone, give you a golden glow and increase natural melanin.

Before you Tan:

Cook explained that you need a clean canvas before applying tan. If you want your tan to look flawless and even, you should shower after removing any tanner. To get rid of stubborn tanners, you can use a tan removal product. After that, exfoliate. You’ll want your skin as clean and soft as possible before you apply a tanner.

To ensure that your tan lasts, moisturize before you apply it. “Make sure you add a pea-sized amount of moisturizer to your hands, feet, ankles, knees, elbows, and any other drier areas to avoid tan clinging there a little too much,” Cook said.

After you’ve tanned, Cook recommended this genius dry shampoo hack. Spray a light dusting of dry shampoo or baby powder on your body after you’ve applied your tanner, and it’ll take away any sticky residue, prevent transfer onto your bedding or clothes, and prevent you from sweating while the tan develops so it doesn’t interfere with the tan.

Buttah

Whipped Body Butter

Apply thick body butter to your elbows and knees, hands, ankles and any other areas where your tanner tends to get streaky. You want to get the most from your self-tanner.

However, this product is now available. This luxurious facial cream can be used nightly to give your skin a gradual tan. It leaves your skin soft and moisturized, without looking artificial. It doesn’t get orange or streaky, even on the neck. The best places to apply it are the ears and neck to ensure a natural-looking tan.

Best Tan for Your Face

St. Tropez Self-Tan Purity Bronzing Water Facial Mist

Editor’s Note: “Anyone who self-tans will know that your face fades first. So I apply this after cleansing and it transforms my face into the most natural-looking fake-tan I have ever seen.” It’s better than the Isle of Paradise Tanning drops, it’s better than whatever you’re using now—it never looks muddy or overdone but makes you look like you truly spent the afternoon in the sun. I have probably repurchased this product ten times. This is one of my top five most favorite beauty products. Tanologist Express Tan Water

Editor’s note – “When I started using this, it was the first time I had used a self-tanner. I admit that I didn’t rub it in and I don’t know why. It didn’t look half bad. I then switched to an old sock. I didn’t use a real tanning mit until I almost finished the bottle. But my tan was always great. I never got streaks. Ever.” —Beth Gillette, Beauty Content Manager and Associate Editor
