Water Waves Are the Low-Key Twist on Mermaid Hair We Can’t Get Enough Of

0

Last year, mermaid waves climbed up the ranks to take the top spot in beach waves styling. After more than a decade out in front, beach waves are being switched up in favor of something a little less “done.”

Beach waves are inspired by windswept, salty-licked strands with lots of movement. Mermaid waves, on the other hand, are longer (think waist-length) and wispier (loosely crimped curls instead of bouncy twirls). They are meant to channel the just-dipped texture that hair has received from the sea and then dried in the sunlight.

The flatter crown is a look that’s been gaining momentum on its own as we’ve seen ’70s center-parted XXL Cher hair taking off. This version takes the same look but adds some texture and wear.

The style has been seen on J.Lo and Kylie Jenner, as well as Zendaya, Shay Mitchell, Shay Mitchell, and Zendaya. As with all queen-bee hair styles, we love seeing new interpretations and reincarnations. We love the loose water waves Amy Baines, hair pro, posted on instagram.

It’s the “I woke up like this” step-up from mermaid hair, with a soft bed-head texture that looks like you’ve just let a damp braid loose—hence water waves.

“For this look I used a straightener, angled down the hair, hugging the face, then a liftoff at every bend,” Baines tells Glamour.

This look is for you if you don’t have the time or desire to style. canDepending on how polished you like the look, it can be as relaxed as its name suggests. “You can totally achieve this style by sleeping in braided damp hair,” explains Baines. “When you wake up, run a straightener over the braid [to slightly intensify and set the kinks] and undo it for a wavy look.”
