The Tinder Swindler has nothing on Bad Vegan, Netflix’s bonkers new scammer docuseries

Veganism was not quite as en vogue in the early Noughties, but it was an emerging culinary trend – not least among America’s hottest stars. Savy financier Sarma Melngailis, a vegan herself, noticed the untapped market and opened ‘Pure Food and Wine,’ one of the most popular celebrity spots in the city, frequented by the likes of Alec Baldwin and NFL star Tom Brady. Sometimes, Owen Wilson may be seen walking around the kitchen in his bare feet before grabbing a grass-green smoothie made from grass.

Melngailis was so loved by her staff at the restaurant that she was given the more familial nickname: Sarmama. Everyone was happy, and business was booming. Just It was a pleasure to be there. It sounds like a solid deal. Not the sort of thing Netflix might want to base a true crime docuseries around — where are the Tiger Kings, the Tinder Swindlers, the Made Murderers? Enter the Facebook game Words With Friends and a mysterious online man with a fake name and stranger-than-strange credentials.

A remarkable rise-and fall story, a not completely sympathetic subject, and a shroud filled with mystery thicker than dense fog. Melngailis’ story is that Anthony Strangis took Melngailis for a ride in order to pay for her lavish lifestyle.

He promised all of the cash back in return, and then some — his rhetoric similar to that of a Jonestown-esque cult leader, that money is a meaningless construct and, most incredibly, he was an immortal being and could share his gifts with both Melngailis and her beloved dog. Who wouldn’t sell? The premise is increasingly ridiculous, but one of the talking heads — Vanity Fair writer Allen Salkin, a Melngailis confidente who first recorded her downfall in a 2016 article — makes a salient point: at the time, veganism was entangled with our new age cultural trends like astrology. With this in mind, it is possible to make the eternal beingIt all seems a little more real.
