The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala, or simply the Met Gala, is usually held on the first Monday of May. It’s a seemingly never ending red-carpet parade of celebs—from fashion designers and Hollywood starlets to pop music icons and sports champs—who all come out to raise funds for the Costume Institute. The event was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the original May date has been restored after last year’s September edition.
Let’s take a look back at the greatest Met Gala gowns of all time to get ready for the big return of the Met Gala. This event is known as the East Coast Oscars because of its incredible style. Want proof? Just look back through the years, and you’ll find everyone from Beyoncé to Taylor Swift and even Madonna wearing some of the most incredible gowns. (Remember Rihanna’s gorgeous yellow Guo Pei? Or Claire Danes’s light-up Zac Posen?)
