Some Bottles of Jergens Ultra Healing Moisturizer Are Being Voluntarily Recalled

Kao USA Inc., a corporation that owns a number of well-known skin-care and hair-care brands, has announced a voluntary recall of Jergens Ulta Healing products — specifically certain lots of the 3-ounce and 10-ounce sizes of the popular drugstore moisturizer.

Kao USA has released a statement saying that Jergens Ultra Healing Moisturizer may contain some trace amounts of Pluralibacter gergoviae“A bacterium that poses no medical risk to healthy individuals.” People with certain health issues, such as weakened immune system, may be more susceptible to infection.

Jeffrey Fromowitz MD (florida-based board certified dermatologist), stated that the FDA has approved Jeffrey Fromowitz as a dermatologist. Pluralibacter gergoviaeThis is an uncommon human pathogen and has been linked to opportunistic infections. The most vulnerable are those who are either young or old, immunosuppressed and who have been in hospital for a prolonged time. Dr. Fromowitz explained that the bacterium was involved in past recalls of cosmetic skin care products. It is especially concerning because it has a resistance to parabens that are used in creams to minimize the risk for bacterial contaminants.

Kao USA asks consumers to check for specific lot numbers to see if they have any 3-ounce or 10-ounce bottles that could be affected. The affected lot codes for the 3-ounce bottle size can be found on their back in black ink. The affected lot codes for the 10-ounce sizes are located at the bottom of the bottle. They read ZU722741 and ZU732771, ZU722771 ZU732801, or ZU722781 ZU732881, ZU732881, ZU732781, ZU732881, ZU732781, ZU732881, ZU732781, and ZU732781 ZU732781 or ZU732821.

“Further investigation is ongoing to determine the extent of the problem. Kao USA Inc. quickly took the precautionary measure of issuing a voluntary recall. They removed the product from their warehouses, worked with retailers to ensure that the product was removed from shelves, and proactive notified consumers. Other sizes, lots, and products made by Kao USA brands have not been affected.

Kao USA urges consumers to stop using the recalled lotion. It also recommends that anyone with a affected lot of lotion contact the Kao USA Consumer Care Center at 1-742-8798, or send an email directly to consumer@kao.com to receive a free product coupon. To return the affected product, consumers will be provided with a label and a plastic bag.
