A hairstyle can be a great way of summarizing the cultural mood. We’ve certainly seen plenty of them lately. Jean Campbell shaved her long, elfin hair to make way for a boyish, pixie cut. Fran Summers then unveiled a jet black crop. Kendall Jenner got her auburn moment at Prada while Gigi Hadid argued for platinum blonde. All high drama head-swivelling moments.
These bold statements were made in a world obsessed by instant gratification. But there’s another, much subtler movement happening in tandem. Enter: Riviera brunette. It’s warm, it’s rich and it’s dynamic. It has the sun-kissed, balayage-like qualities of your balayage but retains some of our mystery about brunettes. Think Hailey Bieber, Lily James, Karlie Kloss and Camille Charriere – all of whom have traded in their blonde tresses for rich, chocolate-y tones. Below, Vogue spoke to master colourist Paul Bingham at Larry King for some expert insights into getting – and maintaining – the look.
Can you tell us more about the Riviera brunette colour?
With spring/summer 2022 looming at Larry King, myself and the colour team have been working on new colour trends, and one trend that is starting to stand out to us is Riviera brunette – or what we have named “beached brunette” in the salon.
Why do you think it’s trending at the moment?
It’s very popular as we are going into spring/summer – hair is becoming more hyper-feminine and relaxed, and styling becomes more natural.
What makes it different to a balayage
It feels more natural and organic.

Can you please explain the technique and the history of the style?
This look is derived from past colouring techniques such as ombré and balayage, involving depth at the root area, sun-kissed mid lengths, and in some cases even lighter ends to gain texture, interest and a bohemian soft contrast.
Who is the look?
This colour can be achieved quite easily whether you’re brunette, copper, blonde or have Afro textured hair, as it’s all about multi dimensional colour. To achieve Riviera brunette style, colourists must keep the style seamless.
What are your top styling tips?
I would recommend beach woven hairstyles. If your hair is naturally curly or wavy, I suggest that you let it air dry naturally and use minimal styling products. You will need to take care of this look with regular treatments.
