UPDATE—April 22, 2022:This is great news! MasterClass is currently offering a huge discount on its annual memberships. For a limited time, the brand’s two-person and six-person subscriptions (which are usually $20 and $23 per month, respectively) are only $15 each per month. That means you or a loved one can get access to the complete MasterClass library for up to 35% off—just in time for Mother’s Day and graduation gifting. Learn a new skill below.

ORIGINAL STORY—November 30, 2020: If you have an Instagram account, you’ve no doubt seen an ad for MasterClass on your feed in recent months. The online learning platform launched in 2015 with three instructors—and in the years since, it’s tapped nearly 100 celebrities and industry leaders to share expert courses through an exclusive membership. Admittedly, I’m not much of an online learner, but something about being holed up in an apartment for nearly ten months has me wanting to do something other than bake another loaf of banana bread or failing at puzzling. Only me?

MasterClass courses cover everything you need to know about politics, entertainment and fashion. Each expert creates a virtual lesson plan, which shakes out to about 20 videos—all around 10 minutes each. The courses are billed as “classes that look like movies,” and the description is pretty spot-on, if you take a sneak peek on Instagram or YouTube. The overall feeling is cinematic, from the lighting and coloring to editing. However, the content is served in popcorn-sized portions.

Courses stretch over two to five hours, and you could technically binge-watch a whole series in a single sitting—though after months of quarantine, you might’ve learned that slow and steady wins the race. The clips are short and sweet; you can pause, skip, or rewind to your heart’s content (something you can’t do in an IRL class). Although phones, tablets, laptops and computers work well as viewing devices for the video, my recommendation is to hook up to your TV using an HDMI cable or Roku to get the best experience. MasterClass is compatible with Amazon Firestick and Apple TV, FYI.
