Meet Brittney Spencer, the Country Artist Taking Over Nashville One Song at a Time

0 229

Mickey is the best friend I have. I was just answering the telephone, but I didn’t know she was going to ask me that life-altering question. It was definitely a moment that blew my mind and just being on that stage…getting to sing such a vulnerable song next to one of the most vulnerable people in music, I think, in the last few years. Mickey is the only artist I know who has been more vulnerable, honest, and met every challenge with equal grace. Apart from being my friend, she has the greatest respect for me. It was country as hell to stand next to Madeline and perform this song about Blackness. It was black as hell. It was everything to my. What we were able do together on that stage is certainly one of the highlights of country music 2021.

How has your fashion changed as a country artist over the years?

I love fashion, and I’ve been experimenting more. I love fashion and I am learning so much about how it translates on stage, in person, and on camera. It’s a whole process. It’s a whole process. But I’m a new artist and I’m still just trying things out. I’m still testing the waters and saying, “Maybe I like denim right now. Maybe fringe is what I like. Perhaps I like a coat that reaches the floor. Perhaps I should wear a coat to the stage. Maybe coats aren’t just for outside.”

It’s hard as an artist, though, because you’re doing it all in public. So if you fail, you fail in public. If it succeeds people will remember it because they liked it. It’s so important to me to not be afraid of trying new things in the age branding. I didn’t want to be the artist who always had the same hairstyle. I didn’t want to be the artist who wore the same type of dress, the same outfit or had the same makeup every day. It’s easy for people to fall into this trap. It’s been really rewarding and important to be able to identify your style with others without it being so unique.

How can you make time for yourself with such a hectic schedule?

I am a borderline recluse and introvert. Any chance I have to be alone is very beneficial. I will not travel if I can be at home. Instead, I will stay at home and do things that distract from the important things in life. I’ll watch a TV show or I’ll meet up with friends…people who are easy to be around. I love hiking. I hate driving, but there’s a place I love to go to in East Nashville. I spend time there. I love the woods so I’ll go there. I am very close to my family. Simple pleasures are my favorite. I love stickers and buttons. Right now, I’m looking forward to getting new ones for the new guitar. It’s all strange stuff. It sounds so absurd when I say it outloud [Laughs]. These are the things that make me truly happy.
