How ‘Gilded Age’ Star Denée Benton Made Sure Peggy Scott’s Story Was Told Right

That’s so cool. She’s an icon, no doubt.

Christine [Baranski], Cynthia [Nixon]Carrie [Coon]Kelli [O’Hara]—they were all so generous with their wisdom and knowledge. They’re also funny and witty. They truly made this show ring true. Jeanne Tripplehorn. Everyone. They were so generous with their spirits.

I can’t help but think how ironic it is that Christine Baranski and Audra McDonald star together in The Good Fight Christine and Meryl Streep became best friends after that. Mamma Mia!, and now Meryl’s daughter Louisa Jacobson plays Christine’s niece in The Gilded Age. 

It does feel a little like kismet. Christine and Cynthia [Nixon]It was said that they worked together while Cynthia was in college and Christine had her first child. It’s very special in that way. Christine is the most generous matriarch of our set and I was able hear her humming between setups. It was all so priceless, I feel like it’s something I’ll tell my grandkids.

What’s one of the biggest lessons you’ve learned as an actor?

There’s a maturity now where I’m like, “I want to be well in the midst of all of the success, and I’m not really willing to compromise my well-being.” Speaking to being well, I found out that I got the role of Peggy around the time I had to take a week off from Hamilton. I was really ill, and I’m a recovering perfectionist. I was able to get the call that I had been offered this role. It felt like a [sign]The universe will show you how to take care yourself and receive blessings. stillYou will find it. It’s not about pushing yourself to the limit. I think Oprah calls them God winks, like, “Yeah, you’re on the right track. Stay in this type of mindset because you’re not going to lose any opportunities by not treating yourself like a work horse.”

Did you have a favorite TV show or movie growing up?

Whitney and Brandy Cinderella. [Laughs.] You can see how I got the whole, “I want to play aristocratic women. If Whitney did it, I can do it.”

Is there a TV show or movie that you’ve seen recently that inspires you?  

I loved it so much I could destroy you. I loved it! The Forty-Year-Old VersionThis documentary, which I loved so much on HBO, was a great film. Eyes on The Prize: Hallowed GroundThis is a look at the 21st century Black liberation movement. It is inspiring. It featured many of my activist heroes, and it was a great way to see them.

This is great information. Meanwhile, when you’re on set, do you have any superstitions that you can’t let go of when you’re filming?
