Fans are convinced that HBO’s newest episode was a success. EuphoriaIncluded is a nod Grey’s Anatomy. (Warning: Minor spoilers EuphoriaThrowback spoilers Grey’s Anatomy, ahead.)
Eric Dane plays Cal Jacobs in the HBO dark drama. But perhaps his most famous role is that of Dr. Mark Sloan (a.k.a. Dr. McSteamy Grey’s Anatomy. The character was Dr. Derek Shepherd’s (Patrick Dempsey), former bestie. They had a falling out after McSteamy had slept with Derek (Kate Walsh). In the Grey’s Anatomy universe, both characters are dead. RIP.
The only thing McSteamy, Cal Jacobs shared was Dane’s handsome visage. In EuphoriaDane plays the troubled father of the teen psychopath Nate Jacobs (“Jacob Elordi”) The apple doesn’t always fall far from the tree. In EuphoriaSeason one: Cal had sex (a minor, played in season two by Hunter Schafer), and taped it without her consent. She was a complete piece of human garbage.
Things don’t get any better in season 2. Cal uses bullying and intimidation to hunt down and stalk even more teens after Nate is attacked at a party because of his actions against Jules. However, in episode three, which aired on January 23, fans were given a little more backstory that helps explain—but absolutely does not excuse—Cal’s unchecked anger.
This is where it all begins. Grey’s AnatomyFans took notice. Cal had a best friend in high school. He was in love with him, but couldn’t be with him because of homophobia society and the fact Cal got his high school girlfriend pregnant. Derek was the name of this best friend/lover.
Fans on Twitter immediately noted the possible nod towards Dane’s former television gig—and they thought it was pretty damn rude of creator Sam Levinson. “The writers naming Cal’s best friend Derek is really evil,” one fan tweeted. Another user tweeted, “Cal’s best friend’s name being Derek though?! Sam Levinson knew what he was doing.”

One fan even suggested Grey’s AnatomyCal’s future could have been if Nate had not gotten pregnant. While there are serious flaws to this logic, it’s still a joke.
