Dove Cameron is learning to be as big as she can.

The actor and singer recently posted images of her crying on Instagram. She also included a lengthy caption with a note and a note discussing her mental health, identity versus self, and struggles with depression. Cameron described the internal battle she is facing in both the caption as well as the two-page note that was part of the Instagram carousel. “I’ve been struggling lately with the concept of self, my inner relationship to who I know myself to be and my outer perceivable self who I feel I have never known but other people seem to,” she wrote.

Describing the “diametrically opposed” concept of “identity vs the self,” she expressed her internal struggle in finding her worth. “I have never been able to make them hold hands, and I realize as I get older, it’s because I hold a deep-seeded belief that who I am is wrong, I am not allowed to be just as I am, I am not meant to be here. If I want to be allowed to be here, I feel like I have to be something else. and I really do wanna be here with you.”

The 26-year-old actor shares her emotions on Instagram to show that she is as real as possible. Among the images of Cameron in designer clothes, glittery makeup, and red-carpet events are snapshots of her “real” life. In these she shares images of her friends and family, moments when she’s felt weak or sad, and various other emotions and actions that encompass the “self” that Cameron is making room for.

Both the screenshot note and the caption uncover a side of Cameron that is full of vulnerability and an open conversation on these burdens, one that she admits she shares “without conclusion.” She also offers reassurance to those who are also struggling with their mental health and self-image.

“We all deserve a life unburdened by the societally created identity, we all deserve to unlearn self-abuse and self-hatred,” she writes. “I am on that journey now, and I’m sharing so that we may all feel more comfortable in a conversation that may be confusing, and we may navigate something that feels difficult to put to words, together.”
