Fans How I Met Your MotherNo doubt, you will be tuning into Hulu’s new spin-off How I Met Your Father.After watching the first episode, it is clear that it delivers. But does it reference the original episode? The framing device and the basic premise are identical, but HIMYMThere were many callbacks, recurring gags and props that took on different meanings over the course of the show (ahem Ducky Tie). Naturally, we kept our eyes open during the show. HIMYFpilot for any and every similarity to the pilot of the previous series.
Here are all references, similarities and, okay, some stretches of imagination:
The opening title sequence. HIMYFContains the same theme music as How I Met Your MotherThis song is sung by a female singer, as the series is from a female POV. Sophie was played by Hilary Duff in 2022 and narrated by Kim Cattrall in 2050. The original title featured photos of the cast, taken with a disposable camera. However, this show has the images on a film strip.
Taxi service.In the HIMYMPilot, the core characters jump in and out of a taxi driven to them by Ranjit, who later became a recurring character. Sophie meets Sid (Suraj) and Jesse in an Uber.
A proposal.Just like Lily accepted Marshall’s proposal, Sid (Ashley Reyes), get engaged in this pilot.
Falling in Love with a StrangerTed meets Robin in a crowd and falls for her. He then proposes his love to Robin on their first date. This is what happens to Sophie (Daniel Augustin) and Ian (Simon). They meet through Tinder and fall in love. Then, they have a great first date at a bar. (Yes, both pilots were in New York City, but that’s not enough to be an Easter egg.
Traveling for work. Robin’s travel for work delays her first date with Ted (and becomes a recurring reason for why they can’t be together), and Ian’s being out of town when they match delays his first date with Sophie (and seems like it will become a reason for why they can’t be together).
“YOU SHOULD HAVE KISSED HER!”In the HIMYM pilot, Robin sends Ted clear signals that she wants him to kiss her, but it’s only in retrospect that he realizes it…and feels like a fool for missing his chance. In HIMYFThe characters are slightly more mature and express their desire to kiss even though they choose not to. They should have!
Umbrella photograph.Sophie is passionate about street photography and I was able to see a black-and white shot of her with Valentina (Francia Rasa) in her apartment. It shows what looks like a couple in New York, behind a large, brightly colored umbrella. I NEED THE SET DESIGNERS to TELL ME IF THAT UMBRELLA RIGHT NOW IS YELLOW.
