At Ralph Lauren, Home Is Where the Heart Is

Leave it to Ralph Lauren, purveyor of the great American lifestyle, to make his show guests feel right at home—by literally recreating his home. Lily Collins, Janelle Monáe, and Jessica Chastain are just a few of the A-listers who made their way upstairs to a private space at the Museum of Modern Art, decorated and furnished to replicate Lauren’s own 5th Avenue apartment to a tee. Guests were seated on plush white couches, with lush coffee tables that even had his signature bowls of M&M’s sitting atop them. The show marked a return to an IRL runway presentation, following the brand’s hiatus from in-person shows due to the ongoing pandemic. Rife with Lauren’s classic mix of black of white, the collection paid homage to the past while conveying a sense of unity and hope for the future.

Gigi Hadid walked out first in a black sweater emblazoned with a white “R”, slim black trousers, and black and white spectator shoes, with an oversized black Ricky bag. The show exhibited the absolute best of Ralph Lauren: men’s and women’s designs offering everything you need for daytime, après-ski, and evening. Think: sharp houndstooth and pinstripe suiting for guys and girls, with the women’s styles countered by ruffled blouses and feminine accessories. Fair Isle knits were available in cropped sweaters and a floor-length, sequined gown. Black eveningwear was paired with sturdy silver jewelry and cowboy hats in a faithful ode of the Western style RL has come to be synonymous with.

The show ended with classic evening dresses, slinky black-and-white column gowns, and a few pops of red to offset the monochrome’s headiness. Bella Hadid was a smoker as she moved around the living room in a white column-style dress with open shoulders. Model Vittoria Ceretti wore a classic black tuxedo and a black baseball cap to close the show. For a first show back, Ralph Lauren’s message was loud and clear: although certain unavoidable obstacles have prevented the brand from presenting and celebrating in person, New York is forever.
