Trailer Watch: Alison Pill and Sarah Gadon Are Sisters in Crisis in “All My Puny Sorrows”

“Suffering is something that is passed on from one generation to the next,” says Alison Pill in a new trailer for “All My Puny Sorrows.” An adaptation of Miriam Toews’ novel of the same name, the drama sees the “Them” actress playing Yoli, a novelist who is worried she’s “peaked” and “already on the downside of a largely forgettable career.” Her life takes an unexpected turn when her big sister, Elf (Sarah Gadon, “Alias Grace”), an acclaimed concert pianist, is hospitalized following a suicide attempt. Yoli is able to return to her hometown of Winnipeg to help her heal.

When the sisters reunite, they banter about Elf’s suicide note. Yoli complains that she appeared “two-thirds down the list,” “like an afterthought.” But it’s Yoli that Elf turns to when she needs help the most. “Will you take me to Switzerland?” she asks her sister. “They have clinics there where dying is legal.”

The spot touches on the family’s Mennonite roots and their tragic past — Yoli and Elf’s father died by suicide.

“All My Puny Sorrows” premiered at this year’s edition of the Toronto International Film Festival and is slated to hit select theaters in early 2022.
