“CODA’s” odds of securing the Oscar for Best Picture are looking brighter by the day. Sian Heder’s sophomore feature took home the top honor at Saturday night’s PGA Awards, the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures. The PGA prize “has predicted the Oscar Best Picture winner a staggering 22 out of the past 32 years,” per Deadline.
The award comes on the heels a historic win at SAG Awards where the story of a young singer who is deaf won the Outstanding Performance by A Cast in a Motion Picture award. This made it the first film to be awarded this award with a predominantly Deaf cast.
“CODA” made its world premiere at the 2021 edition of Sundance Film Festival, ” where it made history as the first film to sweep the top U.S. Dramatic prizes were awarded at the fest.
The film is up in three Academy Awards: Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. March 27th will see the Oscars. Jane Campion is favored to take home the award for Best Director for “The Power of the Dog,” which is also up for Best Picture.
