Peter Dinklage has recently highlighted the problematic portrayal people with dwarfism within the upcoming remake of Snow White and Seven DwarvesDisney has responded to the backlash.

On the Marc Maron: WTF?Podcast this week, Emmy Award-winning Game of ThronesPeter Dinklage, an actor, criticized Disney’s use of the term “its” Snow White and Seven Dwarves remake “progressive” while still portraying people with dwarfism in an offensive way.

“Literally no offense to anyone, but I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White—but you’re still telling the story of Snow White and Seven Dwarves,” Dinklage said of the casting of West Side StoryStar Rachel Zegler. The original animated film was released in 1937. It is both the first feature-length animated feature film and Disney’s first animated feature movie.

“Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there,” Dinklage continued. “It makes no sense to me. You’re progressive in one way, but then you’re still making that fucking backward story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together. What the fuck, man? Did I do anything to advance the cause, aside from my soapbox? I guess I’m not loud enough.” He also said, “If you tell me the story of…” Snow White with the most fucked up, cool or progressive spin on it? Let’s do it. All in.”

Per the New York PostDisney has taken action after Dinklage’s criticism. “To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community,” a Disney spokesperson NY Post. “We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period.

The Snow WhiteRemakes are expected to be available in 2023. Marc Webb will direct the film. Rachel Zegler will play Snow White, with Gal Gadot playing the Evil Queen.
