Re “Shedding My Eyesight Helped Me See Extra Clearly,” by Frank Bruni (Opinion visitor essay, Feb. 20):
Mr. Bruni is correct that most individuals don’t discover others’ hardships, bodily or emotional, or cease to ponder the toll behind a smile or amusing. His imagery of sporting a sandwich board to disclose, certainly proclaim, these buried truths struck a chord with me: “Residing with lupus, backbone compressed at 27, immunocompromised for 5 many years.”
And but, in our present must put Covid behind us, in our drive to place particular person rights over the nice of the neighborhood, will the message emblazoned on my sandwich board seize anybody’s consideration?

‘Unbecoming’ Girls
To the Editor:
Re “The Lazy, Drunk, Broke Girls on TV,” by Sarah Hagelin and Gillian Silverman (Opinion visitor essay, Sunday Evaluation, Feb. 20):
One needn’t drop out of dwelling in a self-respecting means as an alternative choice to devoting exhausting effort to attaining the nook workplace.
“Unbecoming” girls, because the essay refers to them, draw extra condemnation than their male counterparts for a purpose: We want sensible, supportive, hard-working girls an excessive amount of.
Pretty or not, society has relied on girls to handle nearly all the things, present all of the nonfinancial assist, and preserve lives and issues collectively when they’re at risk of falling aside. Can’t we simply gown effectively, preserve a good condo, learn, write, and make associates and a few cash?
The very last thing our troubled nation wants, in actuality or on tv, is proudly shiftless, slovenly girls.
