Why a good, generously sized bed will save your marriage (and your sleep)

0 213

When I was younger (read, in my 20s to my early 30s), the idea of sleeping in bed all night with my spouse/husband was something I loved. It was the sign of a good relationship.

Then I Actually We got married. I purchased a queen-sized mattress in a now-defunct departmental shop, where nearly every Singaporean would go to look at mattresses. I simply rolled around in the different displays with my partner and thought, “Oh, this is nice and soft,” and that sealed the deal.

The salesperson responsible was friendly and quick to complete the transaction for over $6,000.

Within a few months, after realising that my husband loves to snuggle and I don’t, I started to regret our choice of getting a queen-sized mattress. I would have preferred a larger, king-sized bed to allow me to adjust my position and move around more easily. According to a recent survey of more 12,000 adults in America, one in three couples struggle with finding the perfect sleeping arrangement that is comfortable for both of them.

Another issue was that my husband preferred the soft bed. And so did I. (Who doesn’t like the idea of a soft, cloud-like mattress that hugs you to sleep?)

But, I noticed a significant improvement in my chronic lower back pain, which I attribute to my scoliosis, postural problems, and I began to sleep on the soft mattress. I went to the tuina. Every week, massage. I would be “fixed” by the masseuse, only to ache again within three days. My lower back would hurt regardless of whether I was exercising or not.
