CCENTDecember can be a stressful time, filled with jam-packed schedules, shopping for gifts, and a holiday party penciled into every night of every weekend—all while trying to find a moment to enjoy in the season. Is there a better place than this? Peyton and Shelly Boles’ cozy Texas cabin.
To put it lightly, Peyton and Shelly’s home looks like something straight out of a Christmas movie. Vintage ornaments, faux fur, twinkle lights, ceiling-high Christmas trees… all rolled into their incredible cabin—it’s the stuff dreams are made of.
Peyton and Shelly talked with us about Christmas decor, shopping for decorations, and their Christmas morning.

When should you start decorating for the holidays
Most years we begin decorating after Thanksgiving, but the past two years we’ve started in early November.
We would love to hear about your holiday decorating experience.
We like to update it over the years. We don’t buy in bulk, so we repurpose items, but make simple changes like adding colors or statement pieces. We chose a rustic-glam look this year, using reds, natural vegetation, and accents of silver, gold, and other bright colors. A few glass ornaments are always added to the tree.
Our favorite items to use are greenery, fruits, and other small items that we can find right outside our front door. This year, we added antlers to our stockings for a rustic look. We also used vintage-styled ornaments on our tree for glam and added twinkle lights. Coziness is what we strive for! A cozy cabin is good for the soul.
How do you budget for decorating seasons? (Things can get costly for such a short amount of time!).
We have a low budget. We recycle most of our holiday decorations, add natural greenery, as well as occasionally purchase a few statement pieces. We like to cozy things up with throws and scents, lighting, and adding color.
Where can you buy holiday decor?
We search vintage at local flea markets, Etsy, small businesses around the Hill Country—and yes, Target and Home Goods!
Are there any holiday traditions you cherish?
We do share a love of baking and cooking. We love late night Christmas shopping and planning our holiday designs, but we also try new things every year, and sometimes that’s the best part. This year, we listened to some old holiday music while we decorated or baked.
Do you have any tips for readers who may live in smaller apartments (and who are on a budget) who might not be able to decorate to their heart’s desire?
Yes! Yes! To make your own garland, you will only need a pair of sheers and zip tie. Twinkle lights can instantly make things cozy and affordable. Low lighting and candles are a great way to add ambience to your season.
How was your childhood home decorated at holidays? What is the difference between your adult home and your childhood home? Did you take any influences from your childhood in putting together your own?
One of us grew up in the ’70s and one from the ’90s. I believe we combined both decades and evolved. We have always loved adding color in our Christmas decor and wrapping presents—which is not the norm. We favor vintage ornaments and statement pieces that will last a lifetime.
How has decorating for holidays changed over the years?
Over the years we have started to buy less and bring in the outside with greenery and fruit for color. One thing that doesn’t change is our love for vintage ornaments and faux fur, as well as twinkle lights.
Are you a slow collector of holiday decor or did you buy it all at once.
All the Christmas decorations that we have collected over the years are re-used and added to each year.
Do you have a favourite ornament on your tree?
Our favorite is a vintage, handmade angel tree topper that we use every year.
Overall, what’s your favorite thing about celebrating in your home?
We love being together as families and the slower pace of the holiday season. The best part about the holidays is the memories we make. Christmas Eve is a favourite of ours, it’s magical and special no matter your age.
What does your Christmas morning look and feel like?
Christmas morning starts with a long, hearty breakfast, hot coffee on our back porch, and a Christmas movie. This is a slow morning when we feel grateful for our family.
Do you have any homemade decorations for your kids or family? Must an increase every year?
Yes! We get out all the handmade ornaments, and we put them on our upstairs tree. It’s the favorite in our house! Ornaments are like old songs when you bring out the vintage one—it takes you back to the year you got it.
How can you get your entire family involved in decorating your home during the holidays? Are you a fan of decorating traditions?
Christmas music is always played and the holiday candles are lit when we decorate. The family will decorate the upstairs Christmas tree. Mom and I will take care of the rest. We start planning our holiday styling/game plans in November. Each year, we update our wrapping designs. We usually start decorating around Thanksgiving and continue until Christmas Eve.
