Trailer Watch: Jessie Buckley Is Haunted and Hunted in “Men”

0 210

Jessie Buckley is following up her Oscar-nominated turn in “The Lost Daughter,” Maggie Gyllenhaal’s portrait of an ambivalent mother, with a psychological horror pic. “Men” sees the “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” star heading to the English countryside in the aftermath of a personal tragedy. The trailer has just been released.

Harper (Buckley) is grieving in the wake of her husband’s death by suicide. She travels alone to a peaceful inn to try to heal. She is not welcomed by the locals. “You must wonder why you drove him to it,” a priest tells her after learning of her husband’s death. “You must feel an awful sense of guilt.” When she tells a bar full of patrons that a man followed her out of the woods and is stalking her, they don’t bother to feign concern, and openly ridicule her. Her living nightmare seems to get worse from there.

“Men” arrives in theaters May 20. Buckley’s upcoming slate includes “Women Talking,” Sarah Polley’s adaptation of Miriam Toews’ novel about a group of women struggling to reconcile their faith in the aftermath of a series of sexual assaults perpetrated by men in their remote Mennonite colony.
