Frankenstein will be attending high school. Diablo Cody and Zelda Williams are teaming up for “Lisa Frankenstein,” a pic inspired by Mary Shelley’s gothic novel. A press release announced that Kathryn Newton (“Big Little Lies”) and Cole Sprouse (“Riverdale”) are signed on to topline the Focus Features title.

Penned by Cody and helmed by Williams, “Lisa Frankenstein” is set in 1989 and tells the story of an unpopular high schooler who “accidentally re-animates a handsome Victorian corpse during a lightning storm and starts to rebuild him into the man of her dreams using the broken tanning bed in her garage.”

Cody won an Oscar for writing 2007 Elliot Page-starrer “Juno.” Her other credits include “Jennifer’s Body,” “Young Adult,” and “Tully.”

Williams is making her feature directorial debut with “Lisa Frankenstein.” She most recently helmed the 2020 short “Kappa Kappa Die,” the story of a young woman who joins her late sister’s sorority to investigate her death.

Newton led the 2020 horror comedy “Freaky.” The “Supernatural” alumna plays Reese Witherspoon’s daughter on “Big Little Lies.” There’s been no word about whether the star-studded HBO murder mystery will return for a third season.
