“Happening,” Audrey Diwan’s drama about a student seeking an illegal abortion in ’60s France, took home the top prize at Monday’s Lumière Awards, presented by the France-based members of the foreign press. Variety confirms that the pic won best film and best actress for Anamaria Vartolome.

“Happening” won the Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival last year. It has been acquired by IFC Films. It will screen at Sundance this week.

Among the other Lumière winners are Agathe Rousselle, who picked up the female newcomer prize for her turn in Julia Ducournau’s Palme d’Or-winning thriller “Titane,” and Caroline Champetier, who received the best cinematography award for musical melodrama “Annette.” Fanny Liatard and Jérémy Trouilh won best first film for “Gagarine,” a drama about a boy trying to save his hometown from demolition, and Marie Amiguet and Vincent Munier’s “The Velvet Queen” took home best documentary. The latter traces two people’s quest to photograph the elusive snow leopard on the Tibetan Plateau.
