Ava DuVernay’s Array Releasing has secured U.S., Canadian, U.Okay., Australian, and New Zealand rights to “What We Depart Behind.” From director Iliana Sosa, the doc made its world premiere at this yr’s SXSW Movie Competition, the place it took house two jury prizes, the Louis Black Lone Star Award and the Fandor New Voices Award. The movie will debut September 16 on Netflix and choose theatrical screens to “coincide with Mexican Independence Day and Hispanic Heritage Month,” per The Hollywood Reporter.

“What We Depart Behind” is a portrait of Sosa’s grandfather, Julián Moreno, and follows his efforts to construct a brand new home in his rural hometown of Durango, Mexico. “The movie is finally a sort of love letter to Julián and his homeland,” the filmmaker advised us. “Via voiceover that pairs with imagery of Durango’s landscapes, I replicate on my grandfather’s superstitions, my mom’s journey throughout the border, and my grandmother’s premature demise when my mother was simply an adolescent. As I interweave these completely different threads, I’m in a position to construct relationships and mutual understanding with my relations, unearth buried reminiscences, and finally piece collectively a fragmented household historical past. The movie honors my household on each side of the border and tells their story — the story of individuals we not often see onscreen.”

“Iliana Sosa’s quietly highly effective documentary ‘What We Depart Behind’ is an ode to the life and legacy of her hard-working grandfather and of individuals like him who decide happiness by love of household and group, not {dollars} and cents,” stated Tilane Jones, president of Array. “Array Releasing is thrilled to amplify this transferring story that may resonate with movie lovers all over the world.”
